July 2007

I started building a portfolio consist of several ETFs(XIN,XIU,XBB,XSP,XRE) in early April this year. I tend to keep the money evenly spread out among them, which means that each one will account for 20%.

Since I bought them, as you might expect, some of them have gone up in value while some go down. But none of them has been off by more than 2%. I have managed to save up around 2000 dollars up till now. I am thinking about if I should balance now or wait until I have more to contribute to the total portfolio.

The major concern I have about balancing now is that none of the ETFs has been off by more than 2% compared with the intended allocation. If I rebalance now, it will not make a significant difference in terms of the cost per unit. It might be better just wait and see how the market goes for now.

But on the other hand, since I have referred one friend to Questrade, I have 100 dollars free trade until August. If I do it now, I can save something in trading commission. And other than investing this 2000 dollars, I have nothing to do with them. There might be some opportunity cost associated with the wait-n-see strategy.

Well, maybe, I will just wait until August, save up more money, and rebalance before the free trade offer expires.

I have received the first dividens for a total of 61 dollars in my Questrade account yesterday from the ETFs I have in my portfolio. It really feels great to receive SOMETHING in return when you are watching your ETFs trying to appreciate in value.

Compared with the mutual funds I have with ING which does not pay out any dividens at all, I started to taste the sweetness of the dividen investing. I think I will follow this route more in the future.
